title: Being second in a category is worth a fraction of being first

Two companies hold similar data. One licenses it this year, the other in three years. The second one will not get a slightly lower price. It will usually get a materially lower one, and the reason has nothing to do with the quality of the data.

A buyer does not price your dataset in isolation. They price it against what they would otherwise have to do to get the same answer. That alternative might be building the capability in-house, buying a proxy, or going without. Whichever it is, its cost sets the ceiling on what your data is worth to them.

When you are the first credible dataset in a category, the alternative is expensive and uncertain. Nobody knows what it costs to replicate, because nobody has. That uncertainty is worth money to you.

## What changes once someone else has sold

The moment a comparable dataset is licensed in your category, three things happen at once.

The alternative stops being hypothetical. There is now a known price for something approximately like what you have, and it becomes the reference point for every conversation you have.

The urgency drains out. A buyer who already has coverage of your category is no longer solving a gap, they are considering an upgrade. Upgrades get evaluated slowly and paid for cautiously.

And the burden of proof moves onto you. As the first, you had to show the data was useful. As the second, you have to show it is meaningfully different from what they already licensed, which is a harder argument to make and one that turns on coverage, history depth and refresh rate rather than on the idea.

## This is not a reason to rush

None of this argues for taking the first offer that appears. A badly prepared dataset taken to market early gets a poor price and burns the relationship with the buyers who looked at it.

What it argues for is knowing where you stand. If nothing comparable to your data has been licensed, you have an advantage with a shelf life, and it is worth understanding what that advantage is worth before it expires. If something comparable already exists, you need to know what makes yours different before a buyer tells you it does not.

## The question to ask now

Not "what is my data worth", which cannot be answered in the abstract. Ask instead: if a buyer wanted what my data shows and could not have mine, what would they do instead, and what would that cost them?

If the honest answer is that they would struggle, you are early and that is the position worth being in. If the honest answer is that they would buy something similar next week, that is worth knowing too, and it changes what you should be doing about it.

Either way the answer comes from looking at the market, not at your schema.

## This is the market we run

Xferdata values a company's data, builds the auction pack, and runs the auction to buyers globally.

**If you own the data**, run a valuation and find out what yours is worth.

**If you buy data**, sign up and tell us what you are after. You will see packs as they come to market.
